Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man is Sassoon's semi-autobiographical account of his early years in Kent and the beginning of the First World War. In it Sassoon drew on his pre-War diaries but published the book anonymously and used a stand-in narrator called George Sherston. Published in , it summoned up a lost way of life. Following on from Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man () and Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (), Sassoon’s third and final instalment, Sherston’s Progress, is set in an asylum for shell-shocked officers, and deals with the author’s final acceptance of these realities, and ultimately to resolve his emotional turmoil.

Memoirs of a fox-hunting man is an autobiographical novel, and as such offers a first-hand experience of an author, and exceptionally brave soldier, who lived through the ordeal of the trench war.
